What is Internet Marketing?

If you run an online business you will no doubt be hounded by constant phone calls and emails from companies claiming they will “get you to page 1 in google for your chosen keyword”. Before I explain why this isn’t as great as it seems, I’ll go over a few facts: -

1) No one can guarantee placement in google
2) Google do not have “arrangements” with any companies
3) Any manipulation of their rankings by black hat methods will eventually get you banned

What these companies normally do is build links to your site using your chosen keyword in the anchor text of the link. It’s actually pretty easy to do this for most keywords, however, with a few exceptions, one keyword will not get you the results you are looking for from your web site.

When they sell their services to you it certainly sounds tempting. For example if you sell golf balls then appearing on page one for the search “golf” would obviously be a big ego boost and get you loads of traffic. So, what’s the problem?

The problem is that the traffic is not targetted. If 100 people search for golf, how many of them are likely to be looking to buy golf balls, and even if they are who’s to say they are interested in your brand of golf ball?

So what do we recommend? Concentrate on the long tail.

“Long tail” searching is targetted, specific searching, which goes directly to what the customer wants. For example if a customer searches for “Buy Titelist golf balls glasgow”, we don’t want them to land on our home page, we want them to land directly on our lovely, optimised Titelist Golf Balls page.

How is this achieved? There are several factors, however, the main ones are simply: -

1) A good overall link profile from relevant resources
2) High quality, keyword rich content
